This glossary examines common terms found in the Fixed-Line (Wireline) communication space. Use this glossary when you are trying to learn what all the fixed-line telecom terms mean.

Term Description Source
Fixed-Line Refers to wired devices. For example, a fixed-line phone is a standard phone with the handset wired to the base unit in contrast to a portable phone or cellphone. PCMag.com
Landline Land based. Refers to standard telephone and data communications systems that use in-ground and telephone pole cables in contrast to wireless cellular and satellite services. PCMag.com
POTS (Plain Old Telephone System) See PSTN See PSTN
PSTN (Public Switched Telephone Network) The PSTN is the means by which most landline telephone calls are routed. It is the collection of interconnected systems operated by the various telephone companies and administrations around the world. The PSTN is also known as the Plain Old Telephone System (POTS). VOIP (Voice over IP) VoIP stands for Voice over Internet Protocol, and refers to the routing of voice calls over the Internet (or other IP-based network). You may have heard VoIP also referred to as IP telephony, Internet telephony, Broadband telephony, or Voice over Broadband. GizmoVOIP
